surf spots in maldives

Ride crystal-clear waves, soak in stunning views, and feel the thrill at our top surf spots. From beginners to pros, the Maldives’ surfing paradise is waiting to be explored!

Cokes (Thulusdhoo, North Malé Atoll)

A powerful right-hand reef break just a short paddle from Thulusdhoo Island. Named for the local Coca-Cola plant, Cokes delivers steep, hollow barrels—best suited for intermediate to advanced surfers. It works best on southeast swells and offers northerly wind protection. Often considered the Maldives’ gnarliest wave.

Chickens (Across the Channel from Thulusdhoo)

This classic long left-hander peels perfectly along a reef wall, offering rides up to 500m when conditions align. Ideal for intermediate surfers, Chickens handles size and delivers smooth open faces on southeast swell. Perfect on mid- to low-tide.

Jailbreaks (“Prison Point”, Himmafushi)

A fast, multi-section right-hander known for its three linked sections and long rides. With fewer crowds and variable intensity, Jailbreaks offers something for both intermediate and advanced surfers—especially during bigger swells. Easily accessible from Thulusdhoo by boat.

Sultans (North Malé Atoll, near Kuda Villingili)

A playful right-hand point break known for clean walls and occasional barrels. Great for intermediate to advanced surfers, Sultans handles speed and offers room to perform aerials and turns. Best surfed at mid-high tide with northwest offshore winds

Honkeys (Neighboring Sultans)

A challenging left-hander breaking over a shallow reef, Honkeys offers hollow, punchy waves and is best for intermediate riders. Ideal with westerly winds, this spot often issues barrels when conditions sync up. Less crowded and local-favorite status.

South Male’ Atoll (Less Crowded, Fun & Punchy)

Guru’s (Gulhi Island): Powerful left-hand point break that picks up southern swells easily. Fast, hollow, ideal for intermediate surfers.

Twin Peaks (Gulhi): Dual right and left peelers. The left runs at high tide; the right is more reliable on deeper swell. Beginner-friendly.

Quarters / Kate’s (Anantara area): Short rights or lefts, small and punchy; they need bigger swell to fire. Suitable for intermediates.

Natives / Foxy’s (channel reefs): Hollow, fast right-hand barrels breaking over shallow reef. For advanced surfers only.

Riptides (Guraidhoo channel): Long channel right with strong currents. Offers hollow walls and fast sections—great for experienced surfers.

Meemu Atoll (Central Atolls – Occasionally Surfable)

Muli Inside (Meemu Atoll): Fast, hollow right-hand wave when big swell hits. Long walls, shallow end section. Recommended for intermediate surfers.

Muli Outside (Meemu Atoll): Picks up more swell; long right walls with manageable take-off and safe exits. Works well with southwest wind.

Maafushi isn’t known as a major surf destination, but you can find small reef waves nearby, especially during bigger swells. However, for consistent surf and better waves, we recommend heading to Thulusdhoo (home of Cokes and Chickens) or Gulhi in South Malé Atoll.

Let us get you started — beginner surf lessons and mellow waves await at SurfDiveMaldives.com.

Hands down one of the best things I’ve done in the Maldives. As someone with zero surfing background, I felt safe every step. The instructor explained everything clearly, guided me in the water, and I even stood up on my very first wave! Can’t wait to join a longer course next time!

Austin Hayes

Fuvahmulah is a dream come true for surf lovers. With extra time in the water, I caught wave after wave and even rode some of the island’s most famous breaks. The surf guides were extremely knowledgeable and made safety a priority. Can’t wait to return next season!
